This temple is located in a narrow, quiet street
behind Myoritsu-Ji Temple. It contains the Issho Duka (Issho Mound), which
is inscribed with a farewell haiku composed on the eve of Kobayashi Issho's
death: Kokoro kara, Yuki utsukushiya, Nishi no kumo (From the bottom of
my heart, how beautiful the snow is, clouds in the western sky). Matsuo
Basho (1644-1694), who visited this place during his trip on the Oku no
Hosomichi (The Narrow Road to the Deep North), mourned the death of Issho. Another monument at the gate of the temple is inscribed with a haiku by Basho, mourning the death of Issho: Tsuka mo ugoke, Waga naku koe ha, Aki no kaze (Enough to move the mound, my cries sound, like a wind in autumn). |
