Gesshin-Ji Temple belongs to the Soto school of Buddhism. The temple is famous for the tea ceremony, because it is dedicated to Senbiki Soshitu (1622-1697), the founder of Ura Senke (*one of the three Senke schools of tea). Senbiki Soshitu was asked to teach the tea ceremony by Maeda Tsunanori, the fifth Lord of Kaga.
In addition, there are the tombs of the Ohi family, who were famous for making ceramic tea ware. The first Chozemon, who came to this city together with Senbiki Soshitsu, is said to have started producing Ohi ware in 1666, when he built a kiln in Ohi Village, at the northern end of the castle town. Ohi ware was patterned after Raku ware, produced in Kyoto.
Members hold a tea ceremony on the 23rd day of every month, the monthly anniversary of the date of Senbiki Soshitsu's death.
